THE BE KIND PROJECT
Before we were Bumblebee, we were the Be Kind Project.
I had this vision of creating a space where people felt safe to explore tricky subjects, like bias, discrimination, hardship, and privilege. With a strong interest in social psychology, I want to bring these research findings out of the journal pages and into real life, finding ways to improve wellbeing in the community and perhaps make the world a little kinder.
I have this theory that people are a little like bees. When bees feel safe and happy, they go about their business making the world a brighter place. But when they're scared or angry, they'll sting you at whatever cost. I think that people who don't have the means to care for themselves in a way that makes them feel safe and secure sometimes don't have the space to extend that kindness to others. This idea isn't firm in the research as of yet, but I'd like to find out.
Nevertheless, the myriad of wellbeing benefits associated with yoga are well documented and it's our mission to help as many people as possible access it.
WHAT WE'RE DOING NOW
The Be Kind Project is still the heart of Bumblebee Yoga. We have two main ways that we're carrying on this spirit: The Pay it Forward System, and Community classes.
The Pay it Forward System is a unique process that helps make yoga more financially accessible for people. When someone books a yoga class, they can also book a $5 Pay it Forward voucher. Bumblebee Yoga then also chips in $5. When cost is a barrier for someone accessing yoga, they can get their class for just $5.
The Be Kind Project also offers yoga and wellbeing sessions to people who might not otherwise be able to access it by regularly running free community classes. We hope to run more and more different types of sessions and to work with community groups across Adelaide to open up the conversation about self care, wellbeing, and kindness.
